It has been way too long since either one of us has written a review. Life has been busy, but hopefully we can get back into the swing of things.

So the first book that we are going to re-kick this thing off with is by the one Author who got us into wanting to try doing a book blog in the first place, Mrs. Lacey Weatherford! We have been given the chance to be a Beta reader for her new book “Fire & Ice (Book of Shadows #1)”. This book is a retelling of The Trouble With Spells through the love of our literary lives, Vance Mangum.

I’m going to be completely honest. I knew Vance could not stop talking to Lacey and was THRILLED when she said she was writing the series through his eyes. Vance has also gone through some changes, muse wise. Originally, actor/Jedi Matt Lanter was the muse. Now it is the wonderful model Aaron McGuire. I was a little peeved that Lacey would change muses and felt that Aaron could not fill the shoes. Boy was I wrong. After having the opportunity to meet Aaron at a convention, Aaron became Vance. Vance was real! It was a match made in heaven… er, Sedona.

While reading Fire & Ice, we could picture Matt in some scenes and Aaron in others. It worked! And our love for Vance increased… as if that could have been possible!

So here we go on to the first review.  I was super excited to see that Lacey had considered me to be a beta reader for this book. If you have read the first stories that took you on the journey through Portia’s point of view and loved it, then I think you will love this journey through Vance’s point of view. I fell in love with Vance all over again while reading this. I can’t wait to find out how the rest of the story unfolds again, but through Vance’s eyes. Lacey Weatherford knows how to hook you into the story.  So I would highly recommend that you pick this book up. I give this book 5 stars.

I remembered certain scenes from The Trouble With Spells and knew when they were coming up. But I was so excited to see things from Vance’s side. He had so much emotion that was just begging to be told. My absolute favorite scene was the Halloween set-up. It makes me wish Halloween was like that for me. Lacey sucks you in to her characters and you fall in love with them… even if they are evil. She still has you loving to hate them. You do not need to read The Trouble With Spells to follow along with Vance’s side. But there are always two sides to every story, and both are equally fantastic. I give this 5 stars.

Synopsis: When Portia Mullins discovers the love of her life is still alive her heart soars.  But reality sets in immediately causing it to plummet when she realizes he doesn’t remember his past life with her.  Unwilling to give up, she embarks on a loving quest to restore his life to him.
Vance Mangum sees the beautiful girl claiming to be his wife, and while he can’t remember her, he can’t deny the intense pull he feels between them.  Not knowing where else to turn, he agrees to give her the time she’s asked for and to assist her in the effort to recover his memories.
The two quickly reconnect, but dark surprises are lurking in the wings when Vance discovers a desperate longing for something he feels he can’t withstand.  Will he be able to resist? Or will evil raise its head in a new form, leaving Portia as the prey of the very man her heart desires?
Darkness reigns supreme in this haunting tale of love and desperation, Of Witches and Warlocks, The Dark Rising.

Our bad boy Vance takes his bad-assery to a new extreme. At the beginning, I hated how Vance was acting, but it made sense as to why he was acting like that. He goes down paths you wish he never thought to go down, such as hunting after a certain witch in an alley and mingling with the evil witches and warlocks he tried so hard to run from. It certainly is a side you did not want to see, but it’s still Vance and he is just as loveable as ever.

In this latest installment of the series, Portia still sees some of her old Vance in him, though he does not. Thinking he has a bad case of amnesia, Portia tries her hardest to get him to realize that he is still her loving husband, he’s just being stubborn.  But she will stop at nothing to prove he is still good.  When things turn out to be a lot worse than Portia imagined, was she really dealing with Vance, or someone from his past? What the heck happened at the end? Was I reading what I thought I was? The biggest question remains: What will happen in the fifth and final installment, Possession of Souls (due out in early 2012)? All I can say is that when it comes to Lacey and her books, patience goes right out the window.

Since this is the Masquerade Blog Tour de Force, what better way than to unmask Lacey Weatherford’s leading man? Who is he? What’s his back story? Why do girls love him?

So, who is he?

The name is Mangum, Vance Mangum and he is just as mysterious as James Bond himself. When you are first introduced to him, depending on the edition of The Trouble With Spells you are reading, he seems to be a bit of a stalker. Always watching Portia’s movements and expressions. After reading a little bit more it all becomes very clear as to why he is looking after her: she is drawn to him. However, he cannot make contact with her until her 16th birthday. But what girl wouldn’t want the hottest guy in school to be watching their every move and take notice? Since Vance keeps to himself at school, there are various rumors spread like wild fire. But that’s the way Vance likes it. And in turn, that’s why we like it: he’s a bad boy!

What’s his story?

He is a very powerful, not to mention totally swoon worthy warlock. His dad, Damien Cummings, saw Vance’s powers manifest at a very early age and tried to steal his powers for himself. During a secretive journey Damien took Vance on his mother, Krista, followed and observed one of many exchanges of power. Krista decided she had to take Vance and run with him. She packed the car and ran off with Vance after his dad brought him home and Vance has been on the run ever since. Krista finally met a witch who belonged to a coven in Sedona, Arizona named Marsha and begged her to take Vance and raise him as her own nephew. Once in Sedona, he became part of the coven in which Marsha belongs. The coven is also run by none other than Portia’s Grandmother and father. Finally, Vance has found something close to a real family. But for how long? Damien is still searching for Vance and will not stop until he gets him.

Why do girls love him?

He is the mysterious bad boy who rides a motorcycle clad in a black leather jacket. Those baby blue eyes of his make you want to stare at him for hours. Not to mention, he protects his girl. And just forget about his steamy make-out sessions that make you super jealous of Portia. He’s the full package…. just not real. Or is he? Lacey had to come up with Vance somewhere, right? Well, the name came to her while on a road trip and noticed “Vance” on a sign along the highway. Combine that with a family friend’s name and you get Vance Mangum. But Vance’s reality doesn’t stop there. Any fan of a certain someone who reads the series will picture his every expression, as if it was turned into a movie already. Wouldn’t that be nice to see this wonderful story on the big screen?

But since it is a masquerade, you’ll have to figure out who Lacey’s muse is!

When he isn’t chasing the dream, he is searching for the Presidential tunnel to sneak Marilyn in.

When he can’t find the tunnel, he may roam around the sorority house looking for a roommate for his friend.

When the girls in a special area of California make a move on him, he may have to suck it up and lose the purity ring.

When he’s done with his good deeds, he might dabble in the dark side of life on the weekends.

So now that you’ve got your eye candy fill, now for the free stuff! The Back to the Books Giveaway Hop is hosted by Kathy at  I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and Heather at Buried In Books. The hop runs from September 1 (that’s TODAY!) through September 7 (that’s WEDNESDAY!)

It’s that time of year again, the yellow school buses are stopping through the neighborhood, crossing guards are stopping traffic, and Back to School supplies are on sale. I don’t know about you, but back-to-school shopping kind of makes me feel like a fan girl. All those cool lunch boxes and backpacks really makes me wish I was going to grade school rather than college.

But you know what else makes us feel like fan girls? Meeting some wonderful people whose works we admired. Case in point, the chance meeting we had with our favorite author, Lacey Weatherford who wrote the Of Witches and Warlocks series. Lacey, who happens to live in the same state as us, came down to the Valley of the Sun with her husband and cover models, her daughter Kamery and son-in-law Jake, for a baseball game and scrub shopping. We happened to be at the 5 and Diner restaurant in the same mall they went shopping at. We got ahold of Lacey and she was more than happy to come visit, and her family was starving. We’ve only seen Lacey from her tiny Twitter picture, so we did not have a good idea of what she looks like in person. Half-way through our meal, a lady in a red shirt walked through the door and came right over to us. First words out of her mouth were “Move!” Nice greeting, but Valerie obliged. We sat at the table for 2 hours, although it did not feel like it, talking about how Lacey came up with the book idea, where she got her character names from, and various other things. It was so awesome and Lacey is such a lovely, wonderful goofball. Sadly, it slipped our mind to take a picture with her. Next time!

We here at Book Minions are giving away a $25 gift card from Amazon.com! “How do I enter?” Well, we’re glad you asked! Why did we bring up our fan-girl moment? We would love to hear which of your favorite authors, or even cover models, you have met Haven’t met anyone? No problem! Just comment on which author, living or dead, would you love to meet and how you think you would react. Please include your e-mail address in your comment so we can notify you if you win!

My Thoughts:

First off, the Of Witches and Warlocks series is one of my favorite paranormal series. Lacey has a way of making you fall in love with the characters and the story. Another thing I love about the series is that although Lacey loves leaving you hanging at the end of each book, the next book picks up right where the one before it left off. So instead of rereading an entire book to remember what happened before you start the new one, the last few pages are fine.

This book had some drama along with the ordering and shipping. I periodically checked Amazon for the paperback version and once they had it listed, it said “currently unavailable” for at least two days after posting it. Once I was finally able to order it, I picked the cheaper shipping, and it turned out that the delivery date was set for the day I flew out to California. When I told Lacey the irony, she told me she would hope it arrives before I went to the airport. Usually, UPS shows up at my house around 6 or 7 PM, so I doubted that I will get it before I left. However, once we left our house to head to the airport, I saw a UPS truck at the end of my street. I KNEW my book was on that truck. But my dad did not want us to be late to the airport and miss our flight, so we did not turn around to grab the book.

This book has a special spot in my heart. Why? Because the shoulder length brown hair with rectangular glasses that Vance stalks down the alley is me! Yes, you read correctly, I am written into a few scenes with Vance and Portia. How? I was the Grand Prize Winner for the Demon Kiss Blog Tour and the prize included all four books and being written into a scene with Vance!

I was excited to read my part in the book. As I was reading it, I couldn’t help but feel how stupid my character is. Bringing back-up to confront Vance? Did I really think that would work? But it was a great laugh and made me wonder if I were in that situation, what would I do. So HUGE thanks Lacey for writing me into the book and to Belinda for sponsoring the tour!

The Dark Rising has twists you do not see coming. The one downer about this book is that the once loveable Vance Mangum is no longer that loveable and goes down a path you wish he never would. But one of the twists really makes you think about what you just read. Is Vance still loveable? Or is he lost to the dark side?

Another thing I love about the series is the powers that Portia and Vance possess. Who wouldn’t love to paint their house with a simple touch of the wall? Or heal something while passing your hands over someone’s body? In The Dark Rising, Portia gets a new power that would be quite fun and could save a lot on travel expenses. Her new power could come in handy when you want to meet your favorite celebrity or any other mayhem one may think of.

I cannot wait for the fifth installment of the Of Witches and Warlocks series, Possession of Souls. Can it be February already?

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week’s pre-publication “can’t-wait-to-read” selection is:

Lacey Weatherford’s “The Dark Rising” (Of Witches and Warlocks #4)

Release date: Available NOW for e-readers and computer from Smashwords. Print available July 12, 2011 through 4 Corners Press.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

When Portia Mullins discovers the love of her life is still alive, her heart soars. But reality sets in immediately causing it to plummet when she realizes that he doesn’t remember his past life with her. Unwilling to give up on him, she embarks on a loving quest to help restore his life to him.
Vance Mangum sees the beautiful girl standing before him claiming to be his wife, and while he can’t remember her, he also can’t deny the intense pull he feels between them. Not knowing where else to turn, he agrees to give her the time she’s asked for and to help her in the effort to recover his memories.
The two quickly reconnect with one another, but dark surprises are lurking in the wings when Vance discovers a desperate longing for something he feels he can’t withstand. Will he be able to resist? Or will evil raise its head in a new form, leaving Portia as the prey of the very man her heart desires?
Darkness reigns supreme in this haunting tale of love and desperation, Of Witches and Warlocks, The Dark Rising.

I’m really looking forward to continuing the story with Portia and Vance. Book 3 (Blood of the White Witch) really makes you want to know what happens next. If you are thinking about starting to read the series and are just as impatient as I am, I suggest you wait until The Dark Rising comes out. It also doesn’t help with my lack of patience when there are a few certain people teasing me about it! But my day will come…. not soon enough though.

Another reason that I am eagerly waiting to read this book is that I have a scene with Vance in it! I was the grand-prize winner for Lacey’s Demon Kiss Blog Tour! One of the prizes I won was to be written into a scene with the hot warlock himself.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This Teaser Tuesday comes from Lacey Weatherford’s The Demon Kiss (Book 2 of her Of Witches and Warlocks Series)

“Pumpkin, I’m an encylopedia salesman,” I mimicked him. “But really I’m a warlock. Oh and did  I mention I’m a federal agent also?” I paused. “Is there anything else that I need to know about you?” I added loudly, calling to him over my shoulder, as I cast a glare back at him.

His only response was laughter.
